Eagles strike 4 times in 3rd in defeating Wildcats

ELLIOT LAKE, Ont. – The Soo Eagles rode the strength of a four-goal third period to pull out a 5-2 come from behind Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League victory over the Elliot Lake Wildcats Sunday evening at Centennial Arena.

Elliot Lake opened the scoring 5:52 into the contest thanks to Jacob Kelly’s ninth of the season.

The Eagles countered with the equalizer prior to the midway mark of the first period when Landon Hubbard notched his 12th of the campaign at 9:08.

Heading into the middle stanza, the Wildcats regained the lead at 11:41 compliments of Brett Jacklin’s 17th to make it 2-1 for the home side after 40 minutes.

A two-man advantage that carried over to the third allowed the Eagles to draw level early in the final frame as Nate Harris scored 73 seconds into the session.

Matt Meininger then put Sault Ste. Marie in front for the first time eight and a half minutes into the third.

The Soo kept coming and went up by two when Hubbard notched his second of the night by going top shelf from the slot before Bradley Hofelich finished things off with an empty netter at 19:34.

Jacob Palmerio supplied three assists to aid the Eagles offensive cause while Brent Jones added two helpers.

Shots on goal on the night favoured Sault Ste. Marie by a 39-32 margin with Kade Phipps picking up the win and Justin Richer the loss.
