Eagles’ Wood; Thunderbirds Kovacs; Lumberjacks’ Cannon collect Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the Week honours

SUDBURY, Ont. – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Monday that forwards Caleb Wood (Soo Eagles), Jacob Kovacs (Soo Thunderbirds) and Alex Cannon (Hearst Lumberjacks) have been named its Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the Week for the period ending Nov. 17.

CALEB WOOD, (F) SOO EAGLES – Skating in a trio of road contests last week, the 19-year-old Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., product produced points in each of them helping the Eagles register a trio of victories.

Wood began by setting up the tying tally in an overtime triumph at Rayside-Balfour Thursday, followed that up with two goals in a decision vs. Espanola Saturday then notched the game-winner and dished out a pair of helpers as the Michigan Soo won at Elliot Lake Sunday.

Through his club’s first 25 games, Wood sits second on his squad in offensive production 19 points, including a dozen tallies.

JACOB KOVACS, (F) SOO THUNDERBIRDS – The first-year Thunderbirds forward registered four goals in three away match-ups helping his side earn a pair of wins.

Included in Kovacs’ efforts was recording his first NOJHL hat trick as the Ontario Soo won in Kirkland Lake.

He then buried the game-winner late in regulation as the Thunderbirds pull out a narrow 2-1 decision at French River.

The 16-year-old Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., native currently leads all NOJHL rookies in both goals and game-winning markers with 16 and three respectively.

ALEX CANNON, (G) HEARST LUMBERJACKS – The 19-year-old Cannon, who hails from South Bend, Ind., tacked on three more tallies, including a game-winner, to his yearly totals during the time frame with his efforts helping Hearst pick up two triumphs in three games played.

Having already set personal single-season highs in the NOJHL in goals (11), assists (7) and points (18), the forward sits third on the Lumberjacks in markers produced.

Also of note, Hearst boasts a perfect 9-0 record in games when Cannon collects at least one goal.
