Eskimos outlast Voodoos in high-scoring affair

POWASSAN – The Abitibi Eskimos got two goals and as many assists from Ryan Tront and Ryan Attwood to help them outlast the Powassan Voodoos 8-7 Friday in a high-scoring Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League affair at the Powassan Sportsplex.

The tallies were plentiful for both sides on this night with five alone coming in the opening session, including three by the Voodoos.

Powassan came out quickly getting early efforts from Tyler Gervais-Rolfe and Josh Ibbitson to go up by a couple.

Abitibi countered with a pair of their own from Attwood to level the affair only to see Michael Silveri put the home side in front 3-2 in the final minute of the frame.

Five more markers were added in the second with the Eskimos getting three this time to knot the score at 5-5 through two periods of play.

Tront had an early power play goal before Steve Harland and Nathaniel McLeod had efforts for the Voodoos.

The offensive production kept coming before the session was finished with Kealey Cummings and Brennan Roy both finding the back of the net for the visitors.

In the third, Abitibi got three more, including one from Tront and a pair from Blake Cudmore to make it an 8-5 score.

Battling back the Voodoos saw Harland bring his team closer at 15:54 while Nolan Smith got into the act with three and half minutes remaining.

However that would turn out to be the last goal of the evening before time expired.

Tristan Salesse dished out four assists to aid the offensive cause for the winners.

Chet Tooker picked up the victory in relief of Braddock Baalerud while Matt Young was stuck with the loss after entering the game following the Eskimos’ seventh goal of the night. Jack Oncrovic saw the other time in net for Powassan.

Final shots on net were 50-38 with the Voodoos holding the edge.
