Eskis hold on to edge Rapids

NOELVILLE, Ont. – David Osborne had a pair of goals while Brett Ouderkirk had the game-winner and an assist as the Iroquois Falls Eskis held on to edge the French River Rapids 6-4 Friday in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League encounter at Noelville Arena.

Iroquois Falls got off to good start in this contest getting first period tallies from Damon Lemmon, Osborne and Jacob Erwin to grab a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes.

The power play allowed French River to get on the board early in the second thanks to a Caleb Rich man advantage effort.

After Garry Mindus put the Eskis back up by three midway through the contest, the Rapids added another one via the power play in the late going courtesy of Bret McInall to make it 4-2 after two.

In the third, Ouderkirk notched the initial game-winner with 5:23 remaining.

Garrett Johnston countered that with another by the home side during a man advantage less than a minute later.

Rich’s second of the evening for Iroquois Falls at 18:21 made it 5-4, but Osborne iced it with an empty netter with three seconds to go to round out the scoring.

French River did get two assists from Rich to give him four points overall while teammate Thomas Farrell chipped in with a couple of helpers of his own.

Dan Davies made 33 saves to record the win for the Eskis.

Zach Mills faced 49 shots in defeat for the Rapids.
