Espanola rallies to edge Elliot Lake in OT

ESPANOLA – Captain Brad Edwards second goal of the game, which came in overtime, lifted the Espanola Rivermen to a 4-3 come from behind victory over the Elliot Lake Bobcats Sunday afternoon in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at the Regional Recreation Complex.

The home side notched the lone tally of the opening period, which came midway through the session as Matthew Busby connected on the power play as he finished off the work of Cray Roberge and Blake Peavey.

It was all Elliot Lake in the second stanza as they struck three times to go up 3-1 after 40 minutes on markers from Max Glashauser, Torrin Grange and Dustin Cordeiro.

Undaunted the Rivermen battled back in the third to force extra time with a pair of extra man efforts.

Peavey made it 3-2 at 6:31 before Edwards scored with 9:33 remaining in regulation to knot the affair at 3-3.

Espanola then won it in OT following a clean face-off with Edwards tucking in the game-winner past the outstretched pad of Bobcats netminder Matt Young to end it.

Connor Gilmartin had three assists to help aid the offensive cause for the Rivermen while Nathan Campbell had a couple of helpers.

William King picked up the win for the Rivermen making 36 saves for his side who put 37 attempts on Young, who suffered the loss.

With the victory Espanola improved to 27-20-0-1 while Elliot Lake slipped to 21-23-0-5.
