Espanola upends Elliot Lake

ELLIOT LAKE, Ont. – The Espanola Express put an end to an eight-game winless drought thanks in part to a two-goal, two-assist performance from Patrick Smith as they upended the Elliot Lake Wildcats 4-2 Sunday evening in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest at Centennial Arena.

Recently acquired forward Leejay Mieguinis scored first for Elliot Lake in his Wildcats debut to put the home side in front after one period of play.

Espanola countered with the equalizer 7:22 into the second stanza on Smith’s initial point of the night.

An Express power play put them up 2-1 just past the seven-minute mark of the third as Riley Tilot notched his fifth of the season.

Smith struck again midway through the frame supplying the eventual game-winner off a feed from Nate Viberg.

Taylor Woolcott brought Elliot Lake closer with 6:10 to go, but Espanola secured the victory at 17:44 on Aaron Roschinsky’s 10th of the campaign to round out the scoring.

Viberg supplied three helpers to aid the Express in the win.

Taylor Unruh made 35 saves to record his first NOJHL triumph while Matt Kostiw faced 38 shots in defeat for the Wildcats.
