Express outlast Rapids

ESPANOLA, Ont. – The Espanola Express got a goal and two assists from Joel Grandbois along with a pair of markers courtesy of MacKenzie Aiken to help them outlast the French River Rapids by a 5-4 score Wednesday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at the Regional Recreation Complex.

Espanola grabbed a 1-0 lead after one period of play on an Aiken effort at 15:01.

The home side then went up a pair midway through the contest on a Riley Tilot power play marker.

French River battled back before the second stanza was complete getting tallies from Tyler McGregor and Bret McInall to knot the affair at 2-2 through 40 minutes.

The third period saw both teams open up offensively notching three goals apiece to make for an exciting finish.

After Grandbois put the Express up once again 4:03 into the third, the Rapids answered quickly getting the equalizer three minutes later from Tyler King.

Espanola went back in front yet again with Aiken’s second of the night and sixth of the season at 14:20.

They then added another 37 seconds later, via the man advantage, courtesy of Keenan Kennedy’s first NOJHL goal, which turned out to be the game-winner.

Quinn Robelle notched his initial league marker for French River at 15:30 to pull the visitors to within one, but it turned out to be the final goal of the evening as the Express held on from there to pick up the victory.

Aaron Callan made 26 saves to secure the victory for Espanola.

Alec St. Georges faced 51 shots in defeat for the Rapids.
