Gold Miners blast Voodoos for 7th straight win

SUDBURY – The Kirkland Lake Gold Miners had multiple-point nights from six different skaters as they rolled to their seventh consecutive victory, an 8-1 triumph over the Powassan Voodoos Friday evening in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest held at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

The Gold Miners were quick to strike in this one as Tristan Hazlett notched his ninth of the season at 2:17 of the first period.

Midway through the opening session Alexi Rivet made it 2-0 as he finished off the work of Cosimo Amore and Tyler Romain.

A Luc Soares man advantage effort with two minutes left in the frame put the home side up by three.

Connor Thie then tacked on two more tallies early in the middle stanza to make it 5-0 and spell the end of Powassan starter Jack Ondrovic’s night.

Nolan Smith got the Voodoos in flight at 12:35 of the second as he scored for the second time this season to cut into the Gold Miners’ lead.

Kirkland Lake then put the game away in the third adding three more markers to complete the romp.

After Thie finished off a hat trick midway through the period, Hazlett and Romain added power play markers to wrap-up the night’s scoring.

Jeremy Picard-Fiset, Steven Babin and Ryan aubertin all chipped in offensively for the Gold Miners with three assists apiece.

Devon Debastos made 19 saves to pick up the win for Kirkland Lake as they improved to 14-3 overall.

Ondrovic and Matt Young, in relief, combined to face 28 shots in defeat for the Voodoos who dipped to 3-10-0-2 on the season.
