GALLERY: Gold Miners cap off winning weekend with triumph over Express

KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. – The Kirkland Lake Gold Miners picked up three goals and an assist from Joe Whittet to help propel them to a 6-1 triumph over the Espanola Express Saturday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

Espanola did open the scoring on the night during a first period power play as Henry Laukkanen’s fourth of the season at 13:50.

Whittet tied it however before the frame was complete to knot the affair at 1-1.

He then added his second of the night two minutes into the middle stanza to send the Gold Miners on their way.

Later in the frame Zach Bannister and Tyler Fyfe tallied 24 seconds apart to put the home side up by four through the middle stanza.

Action in the final frame saw Whittet finish off his hat trick 78 seconds in before teammate Fyfe finished off the scoring with his second of the game late in the contest.

Marshal Nikitin and Bannister dished out two assists to aid the gold Miners cause.

Shots on goal in the contest favoured Kirkland Lake by a 42-21 count with Cade McEwen picking up the win and Adam Scott the loss.

Including a home ice victory over the Soo Eagles Friday, the Gold Miners added two triumphs to their overall record improving to 11-7-2-1 and 10-3-0-2 in their past 15 outings.
