Gold Miners clip Voodoos 5-2

POWASSAN – A three-goal outsburst, three minutes apart in the latter stages of the second period, helped the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners defeat the Powassan Voodoos 5-2 Friday evening in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest at the Powassan Sportsplex.

The hottest player in the NOJHL and arguably all of the Canadian Junior Hockey League in Powassan’s Steve Harland, opening the scoring 18:52 into the first period as he notched his 38th goal of the season.

Harland’s effort also extended an impressive consecutive game point streak to 28 straight contests. He was last held pointless back on Oct. 3,1 in a setback at Kirkland Lake.

The power play allowed the Gold Miners to tie it at 13:41 of the second as Luc Soares beat Matt Young in the Voodoos net for his 24th tally of the campaign.

Kirkland Lake then went in front two and a half minutes later thanks to a even strength effort supplied by Jeremy Dumont.

Continuing to click, the Gold Miners added another just 33 seconds later off the stick of Jamey Lauzon.

The visitors added to their cushion in the first minute of the third as Zach Pease picked up his 11th marker of the campaign.

Powassan came right back on the next shift getting a goal from Michael Silveri only to see Dumont pick up his second of the night at 3:27 to make it 5-2 on what turned out to be the final tally of the evening.

Ethan Strong and Soares both dished out two assists apiece to help out Kirkland Lake offensively.

Shots on goal were 46-30 in favour of the Gold Miners with Devon Debastos picking up the win and Young the loss.
