KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. – A pair of late third period power play goals proved to be the difference as the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners went on to defeat the Iroquois Falls Storm 4-2 Friday in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League (NOJHL) preseason opener at Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.
Kirkland Lake jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on tallies from Lucas Dubois and Matthew Neuman.
Lucas Villeneuve then put Iroquois Falls on the board before the first intermission.
A Felix Tremblay unassisted marker in the second stanza drew the visitors level after two periods of play.
In the final frame, defenceman Ethan Roy clicked on a man advantage with under eight minutes to go in regulation for the eventual game-winner, before Mason Brownlee iced it for the home side with an insurance effort at 18:09.
Gold Miners’ goaltender Asher Ammann was credited with 33 stops in registering the victory while Storm starter Caleb Shuker faced 36 shots against in defeat.
Kirkland Lake is back at it Saturday as they travel to Powassan to take on the Voodoos in a 7 p.m. start at the Sportsplex before the Storm host the Gold Miners Sunday at Jus Jordan Arena, in a 7:30 p.m. puck drop at Jus Jordan Arena.
