Gold Miners go up 2-0 on Trappers

KIRKLAND LAKE – Samuel Wilbur tallied twice while Steven Babin dished out three assists to help lead the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners to a 5-2 triumph over the visiting North Bay Trappers Saturday evening in game 2  of their Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League quarter-final series at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

With the win the Gold Miners now lead the best-of-seven series 2-0 heading into game 3 Monday evening at 7:30 p.m. at the Mike Rodden Arena in Mattawa.

North Bay would open the scoring five minutes into the contest on an unassisted effort by Shawn Tessier.

Kirkland Lake responded with tallies from Damon MacEachern and Luke Meade to go up 2-1 after 20 minutes.

Austin Rust would pot the eventual game-winner with the only effort of the middle session as he beat Trappers’ starter Evan Cormier at 12:22.

Wilbur made it 4-1 with 5:35 to go then added another just over three minutes later.

Duane Wainman added one more for North Bay just nine seconds after Wilbur’s second of the night in what would be the final goal of the night.

MacEachren also chipped in with two assists for a 3-point night for Kirkland Lake while Jonathon Langford supplied a pair of helpers of his own.
