Gold Miners outlast Eskimos 7-5

KIRKLAND LAKE – The Kirkland Lake Gold Miners trio of Connor McNally, Steve Babin and Jean-Francois Silvestre combined for nine points to help their club rally late and pull out a 7-5 victory over the visiting Abitibi Eskimos Sudbury evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

Eskimos captain Richard Therrien extended a consecutive game point streak to seven games by striking shorthanded 14:10 into the contest as he notched his 26th tally of the season, which tied him for the league goal lead with Sudbury’s Darcy Haines.

Jeremy Picard-Fister answered right back however netting the equalizer on the power play 18 seconds later before Babin added another to put the home side up 2-1 after 20 minutes.

Both teams connected twice in the middle frame Dustin Jesseau and McNally scoring for Kirkland Lake while Aaron Kerr and Ryan Wildman countered for Abitibi.

After Shayne Borden pulled the Eskimos even 26 seconds into the third period, Wildman’s second of the evening with 9:31 to go put his side up 5-4.

Gold Miners captain Jonathon Dionne tied things up a couple minutes later while Jean-Michel Naud notched the game-winner at 13:21.

A late man advantage marker by Silvestre added some insurance while concluding the scoring in the contest.

Kirkland Lake held the shots on goal edge 43-19 with Marc Audet picking up the win helping his side improve to 15-11-2-1 on the season.

Jackson Winkler suffering the setback as Abitibi slipped to 10-15-0-1.

NOJHL play resumes Wednesday as the Eskimos travel to Sudbury to meet the Nickel Barons in a 7:30 p.m. start.
