Gold Miners use power play to blast Beavers

KIRKLAND LAKE – The hometown Kirkland Lake Gold Miners use the strength of scoring their last five goals via the power play to help them defeat the Blind River Beavers 6-1 Saturday night in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

It was all Gold Miners from the onset as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes on tallies by Austin Rust and Samuel Wilbur.

Kirkland Lake extended their cushion to 4-0 through two periods of play as they received man advantage efforts from Luke Meade and Mathieu Lecompte to take full control of the contest.

Meade notched his second of the night eight minutes into the third finishing off the work of Kyle Bishop, who doled out three assists in the game.

Blind River put an end to Kenny Fitzgerald’s shutout hopes with 4:57 remaining while Andrew Bertrand then finished things off for the Miners with power play effort No.5 at 17:58 to wrap things up.

Fitzgerald finished with 19 saves to pick-up the win while Jessie Morin saw 43 shots fired his way in defeat for the Beavers.
