Gold Miners win 8th straight

KIRKLAND LAKE – Jonathon Langford’s second goal of the game, with 8:27 remaining, was the difference as the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners edged the visiting Abitibi Eskimos 3-2 Wednesday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

It started out like it was going to be a high-scoring affair with each side finding the back of the net twice in the opening 20 minutes.

Brady Clouthier gave Abitibi the lead seven minutes into the contest only to see Austin Rust tie it on the power play at 12:06.

Erik Robichaud put the Eskimos back on top at 13:36 only to see Langford notch the equalizer three minutes later.

The two sides then tightened up defensively for the rest of the first period and all of the second stanza.

Langford would break the tie firing home the winner in the final frame to give the Gold Miners their eighth win in a row.

Samuel Wilbur dished out a pair of assists for Kirkland Lake to extend a consecutive game point and assists streak to seven in succession. He has scored six times and added 15 helpers in that span.

Kenny Fitzgerald made 15 saves to pick up the win between the pipes for the Miners while Brody Wagner saw 31 pucks fired his way in a losing cause for Abitibi.
