Gruszka’s shines in Eskis debut and win over Gold Miners

IROQUOIS FALLS, Ont. – Ryan Gruszka scored twice, including the game-winning goal, in his Iroquois Falls Eskis debut helping his new side hold off the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners 4-3 Saturday evening in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League encounter at Just Jordan Arena.

Kirkland Lake did open the scoring four and a half minutes into the contest only to see Iroquois Falls counter with tallies from Kyle Sutherland and Dillan Bruce to put the home side up 2-1 after one.

Gruszka then notched his first of the night and first as an Eski 45 seconds into the middle session to put his club up by a pair.

He then notched the eventual difference maker at 7:39 to extend the margin to 4-1, which also saw the visitors pull starter Victor-Olivier Courchesne in favour of Jeff Veitch the rest of the way.

Tyler Fyfe’s fifth of the season midway through the session pulled the Gold Miners to within a pair heading into the final frame.

In the third Ashton Amaya added another for Kirkland Lake with 10:21 to go, but that’s as close as they would get before time expired.

Shadow Reuben and David Osborne aided the Iroquois Falls cause with two assists apiece.

Shots on goal in the contest favoured the Gold Miners by a 32-26 margin with Trevor Hawkes picking up the win.

Courchesne suffered the loss allowing four against on 14 attempts while Veitch saves all 12 attempts he faced in relief.
