Harland helps Powassan past Mattawa
MATTAWA – Steve Harland scored twice in the third period, including the game-winner, as the Powassan Voodoos completed a comeback from a two-goal deficit to defeat the Mattawa Blackhawks 4-2 Saturday in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League match-up at Mike Rodden Arena.
It was the hometown Blackhawks that opened the scoring just past the seven-minute mark of the contest as Tyler Brodersen notched his 16th goal of the season.
Mattawa extended their lead midway through the period as C.J. Nicholson beat Powassan starter Matt Young to make it 2-0.
The Voodoos got on the board at 15:30 of the stanza as Michael Silveri scored at even strength for the visitors.
Silveri then fired home his second on the game at the 11-minute mark of the second period to tie it as he connected during a Powassan pwer play with the only marker of the middle session.
Harland then fired in the decider a minute and a half into the final frame scoring the eventual winner while extending his impressive consecutive game point streak to 26 straight contests and counting.
The Voodoos talented rookie forward added another at 6:07 to round out the scoring.
David Sherman added two assists for Powassan in the decision.
Young made 40 stops to record the victory for the visitors while Joe Shepard had 41 saves in defeat for Mattawa.
