Hughes pots pair as Rapids sink Cubs

FRENCH RIVER – The French River Rapids picked up a pair of tallies from Spencer Hughes as part of a 5-1 victory over the Greater Sudbury Cubs in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League exhibition game Tuesday night at Noelville Arena.

Starting out fast, the Rapids needed just 44 seconds to commence the evening’s scoring when Abram Snider finished off a Leo Chambers set-up.

It was more from the home side midway through the first frame as Hughes clicked on the power play to make it 2-0 after 20 minutes.

Adam Boucher then extended the French River cushion at 8:40 of the middle session on an unassisted effort.

Cutting into the deficit for Greater Sudbury was Cameron Shanks at 16:07 to make it a 3-1 game before the teams hit the second intermission.

The Rapids would secure the win in the third though on markers from Hughes and Josh Russell.

Chambers finished with a pair of assists for the hosts.

Cole Sheffield stopped all nine shots he faced in one period of work and was credited with the ‘W’ for French River.

Meanwhile, Hayden Williamson turned aside 13 of 14 in 40 minutes of relief.

The Cubs’ Jake Marois made 21 stops in defeat.
