Kirkland Lake earns 5th in a row with narrow victory over Cochrane

KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. – The Kirkland Lake Gold Miners picked up three points apiece from Ashton Amaya, Tyler Fyfe and Alex Storjohann as they went on to defeat the Cochrane Crunch 7-6 Saturday in a high-scoring Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League affair at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

Both sides clicked offensively in the opening 20 minutes combining for five goals, including three by the Gold Miners.

Max Cavallini, Fyfe and Marshal Nikitin connected for Kirkland Lake while Quinn Robelle and Kyle Herbster countered for Cochrane.

The two teams continued to produce in the middle stanza with each club tacking on three markers in the session.

Scoring for the Crunch was Joe Thielen shorthanded along with Darian Harris and Brandon McReynolds at even strength.

Finding the back of the net for the Gold Miners in the stanza were Amaya, Fyfe and Storjohann.

Amaya’s second of the night and 23rd overall put Kirkland Lake by two seven and a half minutes into the third before Herbster added a man-down marker with 2:52 remaining to round out the scoring.

Allan Menary made eight saves in third period relief for the Gold Miners to pick up the win while starter Ridge Gerads stopped 19 of 24.

Taylor Unruh replaced Leighton Williams after the second Kirkland Lake goal and suffered the setback giving up five on the 32 attempts he saw in 56 minutes of action.
