Kirkland Lake wins 6th straight

KIRKLAND LAKE – The defending Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League champion Kirkland Lake Gold Miners are starting to heat up as they skated to their sixth consecutive triumph, a 6-3 decision over the Cochrane Crunch Saturday at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

A well-balanced attack saw the Gold Miners get goals from five different skaters in the victory.

They grabbed a 3-1 lead after one period of play on tallies from Connor Thie, Charles Bruneau-Crete and Steven Babin while Joey Mavrin replied for Cochrane.

Kirkland Lake then tacked on three more in the middle stanza with the Crunch supplying one to make it a 6-2 contest after 40 minutes.

Vincent Currao scored in his Gold Miners debut while Luc Soares had one of his own and Thie picked up his second of the night.

Reed Gregory had the Cochrane goal in the second and Cody Gratton rounded out the scoring nine seconds into the third.

Jeremy Picard-Fiset had two assists for the winners as did Gratton for the Crunch.

Shots on goal favoured Kirkland Lake 28-25 with Josh Erickson picking up the win for the Gold Miners.

Ben Auger started for Cochrane and suffered the loss allowing four against on 12 shots in 25 minutes of work.

Troy Paquette stopped 14 of 16 in relief.
