Locke lifts Abitibi over Mattawa

TIMMINS – Brenden Locke scored three times and also set-up a goal to help lift the Abitibi Eskimos over the Mattawa Blackhawks 5-3 Friday evening in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League neutral site contest held at the Archie Dillon Sportsplex in Timmins.

Mattawa got on the board 8:48 into the game as Andy Williams banged in his second of the campaign.

Abitibi answered right back 56 seconds later to knot the score courtesy of a Locke effort to tie it heading into the second session.

Ryan Tront then put the Eskimos in front early in the second only to see the Blackhawks pull even seven minutes in thanks to Kyle Baril.

Just 31 seconds after the Mattawa equalizer Ryan Attwood gave Abitibi the lead for good and the Eskimos forward then fed Locke for his second of the evening before the stanza was complete.

Locke then finished off his second consecutive hat trick 16 seconds into the third to further his club’s lead in the contest.

Henry Yawit brought the Blackhawks closer with six minutes remaining in what was the final tally of the evening.

Attwood added two assists for a three-point night for the winners.

Braddock Baalerud finished with 23 saves to earn the win for Abitibi while Joe Sheppard faced 43 attempts in defeat.
