Lucky 13 for Voodoos as win streak extended with narrow triumph over Rapids

NOELVILLE, Ont. – A Gabriel Rheault goal eight and a half minutes into the third period proved to be the game-winner as the Powassan Voodoos skated to their 13th consecutive Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League Friday with a 4-2 triumph over the French River Rapids at Noelville Arena.

Gary Mantz ran a current league-high point streak to 18 in succession as he buried his 19th goal of the season 97 seconds after the opening face-off to give the Voodoos the early lead.

French River came back to tie it thanks to Brennan Kelly and then went in front on an Adrian Nicholas effort midway through the frame.

Powassan’s Brett Hahkala would knot the score at 2-2 at 11:26 as he collected his sixth of the campaign.

After a scoreless second stanza, the visitors would get the eventual difference maker off the stick of Rheault in the final frame.

Powassan then used the power play to add some insurance with 3:20 remaining to round out the night’s scoring as Tyler Gervais-Rolfe added one on a late man advantage.

Ryan Theriault and Dayton Murray both dished out two assists for the Voodoos.

Shots on goal in the contest favoured Powassan 31-23 with Nate McDonald picking up the win and Korlan Vader the loss.
