Make it 14 in a row for Powassan with win over French River

POWASSAN, Ont. – Andy Baker tallied twice to help the Powassan Voodoos skate to their 14th Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League victory in a row Monday evening as they doubled up the French River Rapids 6-3 at the Powassan Sportsplex.

No. 7 CJHL-ranked Powassan took control early grabbing a 2-0 lead before the game was seven minutes old on efforts from Dylan D’Agostino and Ryan Bazzana.

Patrick Musico chimed in with one for French River at 14:32 to pull the visitors to within one.

Gregory Trudeau-Paquet’s team-best 13th marker of the season evened the score for the Rapids just past the 13-minute mark of the middle stanza.

A Baker power play effort put the Voodoos back in front at 15:54 only to see Musico add another for French River to knot the affair at 3-3 after two periods of play.

Powassan regained their form in the third however by supplying three unanswered goals to keep their winning streak intact.

Baker’s second of the night and 22nd overall proved to be the game-winner at 5:20 before Gabriel Rheault added some insurance three and a half minutes later via the man advantage.

Tyson Gilmour then iced it for the Voodoos at 15:02 to round out the scoring.

Dayton Murray chipped in with a couple of helpers while teammate Gary Mantz had one assist for Powassan as he extended a current NOJHL-best point streak to 19 in succession.

Nick Campbell played the first two periods in net for the Voodoos stopping 14 of 17 with Nate McDonald entering to begin the third where he picked up the win in relief handling all five attempts he saw.

Korlan Vader saw plenty of rubber in the French River goal seeing 57 shots in total in defeat.
