Mattawa tops Powassan in high scoring affair

MATTAWA – Jimmy Philbin notched a hat trick and Andy Williams doled out three assists to help the Mattawa Blackhawks skate to a an 8-6 victory over the Powassan Voodoos in a high-scoring Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest Sunday afternoon at Mike Rodden Arena.

The visiting Voodoos jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on tallies by Jacob Erwin and David Sherman only to see the Blackhawks bounce back on markers supplied by David Osborne and Reed Gregory.

The middle stanza was all Mattawa however and they tacked on four unanswered goals in the period to go up 6-2 through 40 minutes.

Philbin started things off with a shorthanded effort at 1:26 followed by even strength markers courtesy of Tyler Brodersen and Osborne before Philbin capped off the period with one on the power play.

Quick strikes by Kyle Moore and Tyler Gervais-Rolfe pulled Powassan to within two early in the third, but Mattawa countered with goals from Philbin and Brodersen to restore the Blackhawks cushion.

A man advantage marker from Michael Silveri made it 8-5 while Garry Mindus rounded out the scoring for the Voodoos with 4:10 to go to wrap-up things offensively.

Phillip Cloutier and Nick Grose had two assists each for Mattawa while Gervais-Rolfe had a couple helpers for Powassan.

Voodoos forward Steve Harland also assisted on Sherman’s goal to extend an impressive consecutive game point streak to 19 in succession.

Josh Horner made 35 saves to record the win for Mattawa Jack Ondrovic and Matt Young combining to face 30 attempts in defeat for the visitors.

NOJHL action continues Wednesday as Powassan heads to Greater Sudbury to tangle with the Sudbury Nickel Barons in a 7:30 p.m. start at McClelland Arena in Copper Cliff.
