Mavrin helps Crunch clip Gold Miners in 2 OT

COCHRANE – Joey Mavrin’s goal early in the second overtime lifted the Cochrane Crunch to a 3-2 victory over the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners Wednesday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League preseason play at Tim Horton Event Centre.

The exhibition contest was scoreless until past the midway point of the second period as the Gold Miners’ Declan Conway beat Crunch starter Brett Young at 10:13.

Special teams allowed Cochrane to tie it early in the third as Hunter Atchison scored on the power play 1:48 into the session.

The visitors went back in front with 7:18 remaining in regulation as Joel Fortin scored in a second straight outing for Kirkland Lake.

Answering right back, the Crunch forced extra time as Seamus Maguire struck just nine seconds later.

After a scoreless five-minute first OT with the sides skating four players aside, Mavrin won it for the Crunch as the two teams went three-on-three to give the home side the victory.

Young finished with 43 saves in registering the win for Cochrane.

Tyler Mazocato faced 28 shots in the extra time defeat.

NOJHL preseason action continues Thursday evening in Iroquois Falls as the Eskis host the Crunch in a 7:30 p.m. start at Jus Jordan Arena.
