TIMMINS – Gavin McCarthy kicked out all 27 shots he faced to post his first Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League shutout while Derek Seguin supplied a superb three-point night to lead the Timmins Rock to a 4-0 triumph over the Hearst Lumberjacks Tuesday evening at McIntyre Arena.
The lone goal of the opening 20 minutes came off the stick of surging Rock forward Josh Dickson as he went sent in alone on a breakaway and made no mistake collecting his sixth marker of the season while also running a consecutive game point streak to eight in succession as well as scoring in a fourth straight outing.
Another highly-skilled forward in the Timmins lineup, in their captain Seguin, was the recipient of a turnover that allowed him to skate into the Hearst zone where he wired a perfect shot from the left circle to put the hosts up by a pair after 40 minutes.
In the third, the talent of Seguin was evident once more as with his squad shorthanded, he picked off a feed up the ice by Lumberjacks’ netminder Andrew Stephan, then moved into the zone and while using a Hearst defender as a screen, buried one into the top right hand corner for his second of the night, eighth of the season and 80th career NOJHL marker.
Seguin’s playmaking also showed its strength as he and Zach Smith combined to set-up Brendan Boyce for a fourth Timmins tally six and half minutes in to round out the night’s scoring.
As for the Lumberjacks’ Stephan, he saw 42 attempts fired his way in defeat.
The clubs will now head to the Claude Larose Recreation Centre in Hearst for a rematch Wednesday night at 8 p.m., which will be streamed live on HockeyTV.com.
