Nickel Barons extend win streak to 5
SUDBURY – Sebastien Leroux had a goal and dished out three assists to help propel the Sudbury Nickel Barons to a 5-2 triumph over the visiting Abitibi Eskimos in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play Wednesday evening at McClelland Arena.
Nick Fountain opened the scoring for the Eskimos eight minutes into the opening period only to see Martin Jolicoeur level the proceedings for the home side at 14:35 to send the two sides to the dressing rooms knotted at 1-1.
Darcy Haines notched his 27th goal of the season 5:19 into the middle frame to give the Nickel Barons their first lead of the night with what proved to be the only marker in the second session.
Sudbury came out clicking in the third striking twice in a 36-second span early on to break the game open as Leroux fed Jolicoeur as well as Haines, who buried his league-best 28th goal of the season.
Leroux got into the scoring 8:45 of the stanza to put the game away for Sudbury. In the process the NOJHL’s top point producer now has 61 on the season while running a consecutive game point streak to five. He has racked up 16 points during the offensive run.
Ryan Kerr added a late tally for Abitibi to round out the scoring on the night.
Michael Muzyka picked up the win between the pipes for the Barons making 30 saves on the night as his club won for a fifth consecutive game while raising their record to 18-11.
Jeremy Laux faced 41 shots in a losing cause for the Eskimos who dropped their third straight and fell to 10-16-0-1.
