NOJHL alumnus Headrick named WCHA co-defensive player of the week

SUDBURY, Ont. – The Western Collegiate Hockey Association announced Monday that Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League alumnus and former Soo Thunderbirds defenceman Owen Headrick has been named WCHA co-defensive player of the week for his efforts over the weekend helping his Lake Superior State Lakers post a two-game sweep of the Michigan St. Spartans.

Headrick led all NCAA skaters with five assists and six points as LSSU took a pair against the visiting Spartans.

The Garden River First Nation product produced a couple of three-point nights and was on the ice for three even-strength goals and four power-play tallies as the Lakers scored 13 goals – their most in a series since Nov. 4-5, 2005.

Headrick’s first assist of the weekend came on Friday night’s game-winning goal and he also scored the Lakers’ final tally of a 6-1 triumph.

Saturday he had assists in each period of the Lakers’ 7-3 victory.

This is Headrick’s first career WCHA weekly award.

In 69 career contests with the Thunderbirds, the blueliner scored 12 times and set-up 32 more for 44 points.

He also tacked on 33 playoff points in 29 outings on 14 markers and 19 helpers and was part of the T-Birds NOJHL and Dudley-Hewitt Cup championship side of 2014-15.
