NOJHL announces 3 Stars of the week

SUDBURY – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Monday that Soo Thunderbirds goaltender Brian Kment, Espanola Rivermen forward Brandon Janke and Kirkland Lake Gold Miners defenceman Jonathon Langford have been named its 3 Stars of the week for the period concluding March 23.

BRIAN KMENT, (G) SOO THUNDERBIRDS – In three starts last week the 19-year-old Sault Ste. Marie product helped send his hometown team off to the next round of the NOJHL playoffs by winning all three of them as the Thunderbirds won out over a persistent Blind River Beavers side.

Kment began by registering his first career postseason shutout in a 6-0 blanking of the Beavers this past Thursday.

Two nights later he stopped 25 of 27 shots fired his way in a narrow 3-2 triumph over Blind River on the road.

He then capped off his unbeaten week making 20 more saves as the Thunderbirds won 4-3 in overtime Sunday evening to finish off the series with the Beavers in five games.

As part of his efforts last week Kment went a span of 104 minutes without allowing a goal.

The Soo stopper sits second in the NOJHL playoffs in both goals-against average and save percentage at 1.74 and .918 respectively and also has the lone shutout to date.

BRANDON JANKE, (F) ESPANOLA RIVERMEN – The 20-year-old Huntsville product was an offensive catalyst for the Rivermen in helping Espanola finish off a sweep of Sudbury in quarter-final action.

Janke began by scoring twice and setting up another in a 6-2 victory over the Nickel Barons in game 3 last Monday.

He then added another three-point night in the series finale notching a marker and adding a pair of assists, including having a helper on the game-winner as Espanola won 7-6.

Janke is currently tied for fourth in league postseason scoring with eight points on five tallies and three helpers.

The Rivermen forward has scored in each of his club’s first four playoff contests, which ties him for the second most in the NOJHL.

JONATHON LANGFORD, (D) KIRKLAND LAKE GOLD MINERS – The veteran blueliner, who calls North Cobalt, Ont., home, chipped in on both ends of the ice aiding Kirkland Laker’s efforts in handling North Bay in four straight in quarter-final play.

Last week Langford supplied four points from his defensive position in helping the Gold Miners advance to the semifinals.

This past Monday Langford helped set-up the game-winning goal as Kirkland Lake skated to a 6-1 triumph over the Trappers.

The next night The Gold Miners D-man scored twice and once again assisted on the game-winner as Kirkland Lake won 5-2 to finish the series in the minimum amount of games.

Langford’s six points in the playoffs to date ties him for the most among league defencemen.
