NOJHL announces 3 Stars of the week

SUDBURY – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Monday that forwards Darcy Haines of the Soo Thunderbirds and Austin Rust of the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners along with Kirkland Lake defenceman Daniel Morin have been named the 3 Stars of the week for the period wrapping up April 20.

DARCY HAINES, (F) SOO THUNDERBIRDS – In a contest his team needed to win, Haines came up big for the Thunderbirds scoring once and doling out three assists in Sault Ste. Marie’s 5-1 victory in game 5 Sunday evening.

The 20-year-old Val Caron product also had a marker and an assists in game 3 of the series for a six-point week.

Haines currently leads all NOJHL skaters in offensive production in the playoffs with 18 points, including a league-best eight tallies.

AUSTIN RUST, (F) KIRKLAND LAKE GOLD MINERS – Rust made the most of the two goals he scored last week as they were both game-winners for the Gold Miners who came away victorious in games 3 and 4 of the series, Thursday and Friday, at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex in Kirkland Lake.

The veteran forward, who hails from Algonac, Mich., buried the difference maker in overtime in game 3 to go along with an earlier assist to cap off a 4-3 win for his side.

One night later his tally with six and half minutes remaining was the winner in an eventual 4-1 triumph.

In postseason play Rust has notched a NOJHL-high four game-winning goals while his 14 total points tied him for fourth overall in playoff scoring.

DANIEL MORIN, (D) KIRKLAND LAKE GOLD MINERS – The Kirkland Lake captain picked up points in all three of his club’s contests last week while also bolstering the Gold Miners’ defensive corps in helping them move to within one win of the first-ever NOJHL championship.

The 20-year-old D-man from Ignace, Ont., had an assist in the victories in games 3 and 4 and then notched his team’s lone goal in Sunday’s game 5 setback.

In postseason action Morin has accumulated eight points on the one marker and seven helpers.
