NOJHL announces Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the Week

SUDBURY – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Monday Elliot Lake Wildcats goaltender A.J. Smith, Soo Thunderbirds forward Boris Katchouk and Kirkland Lake Gold Miners netminder Josh Erickson have been named the Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the week for the period ending Jan. 25.

A.J. SMITH, (G) – ELLIOT LAKE WILDCATS – The 20-year-old Southlake, Texas product turned out a .928 save percentage for the week helping the Wildcats go unbeaten with a tie and a win.

He started off with a solid 39-save effort in a hard fought 2-2 draw with Kirkland Lake Friday.

Smith then followed that up with 25 more stops in Elliot Lake’s 4-3 victory over Powassan Sunday evening.

BORIS KATCHOUK, (F) – SOO THUNDERBIRDS – Averaging over a point-per-game so far this season with the Thunderbirds, the 16-year-old Katchouk continued that last week aiding Sault Ste. Marie’s efforts in picking up a draw and a win.

He started his performance by setting up two tallies in a 6-3 triumph over Powassan Friday.

The T-Birds forward followed that by picking up two assists in a 3-3 final vs. the Gold Miners in a battle between last season’s league championship series

In 19 total NOJHL games this season, Katchouk has scored eight times and doled out 14 helpers.

JOSH ERICKSON, (G) – KIRKLAND LAKE GOLD MINERS – A three-game road trip in as many days saw the 20-year-old from Woodbury, Minn., rack up 200 minutes of game action as Kirkland Lake did not suffer a loss.

Erickson finished up with 71 saves in all including a pair of ties in Elliot Lake and Sault Ste. Marie in a pair of road battles against the other top teams in the NOJHL standings as well as a convincing win in Blind River.

On the season the Gold Miners stopper has posted a solid 17-1-0-1 record.
