NOJHL announces Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the Week
SUDBURY – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Monday that Soo Thunderbirds goaltender Brian Kment, Abitibi Eskimos forward Brenden Locke and Cochrane Crunch forward Dustin Cordeiro have been selected the Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the week for the period concluding Oct. 5.
BRIAN KMENT, (G) SOO THUNDERBIRDS – Thunderbirds’ goaltender Kment stood tall in the Sault Ste. Marie net last week posting three consecutive victories helping his side defeat a trio of one-loss in regulation time sides.
The 19-year-old Sault Ste. Marie native began his stellar week that was by making 30 stops in a 2-1 decision on the road at Sudbury Wednesday.
Saturday evening the Soo stopper helped put an end to a franchise-best six straight wins by Elliot Lake as he made 26 saves in a 4-2 triumph over the Wildcats on home ice.
Kment then concluded his week by turning aside all but one of the 24 attempts he faced aiding the T-Birds in their 7-1 win over the defending NOJHL champion Kirkland Lake Gold Miners Sunday afternoon at John Rhodes Community Centre.
In all he allowed only four goals against in 180 minutes work registering a 1.33 average to go along with a .952 save percentage.
BRENDEN LOCKE, (F) ABITIBI ESKIMOS – The offensive efforts of Locke has helped the Eskimos record a current season-high three straight victories.
In a pair of outings last week the 17-year-old Iroquois Falls product began by firing a hat trick, including supplying the game-winner, and adding an assist as Abitibi bested the Mattawa Blackhawks 5-3 Friday in a neutral site affair staged at the Archie Dillion Sportsplex in Timmins.
One night later Locke scored for a third straight game to aid in the Eskimos’ 4-3 triumph over the Powassan Voodoos at Jus Jordan Arena.
On an impressive tear of late Locke has amassed 10 points in his last three outings, including notching seven tallies.
DUSTIN CORDEIRO, (F) COCHRANE CRUNCH – Chipping in with some timely goals, Cordeiro’s efforts on the ice have helped Cochrane come away victorious in four consecutive contests as well as six of their past seven.
Last week saw the 19-year-old from Kitchener post two-goal nights in back-to-back affairs as the Crunch skated to wins over Powassan Friday and Mattawa Saturday.
It marked the third straight game Cordeiro has tallied twice for his squad.
On the season he is currently tied with teammate Cody Gratton for the most goals in the league with 12.
Cordeiro in fact has found the back of the net at least once in eight of nine games he has seen action in so far in 2014-15.
