NOJHL announces its weekly Eastlink 3 Stars
Cochrane’s Shaver, Thunderbirds’ Caruso & Eagles’ Phipps earn weekly honours
SUDBURY, Ont. – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Monday that forwards Bailey Shaver of the Cochrane Crunch and Matthew Caruso of the Soo Thunderbirds along with Soo Eagles goaltender Kade Phipps have been named the Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the week for the period ending Feb. 5.
BAILEY SHAVER, (F) COCHRANE CRUNCH – The 20-year-old native of Marysville, Wash., played a big part in all four victories the Crunch recorded last week as they extended their season-high winning streak to 10.
Shaver started off by scoring once and helped set-up another in a road win at league-leading Powassan last Monday.
He then followed that up by tallying twice, including the game-winner, as Cochrane defeated Iroquois Falls Thursday at home.
The Crunch forward added another tally at the Eskis Friday before capping off his efforts with two more markers, which included another game-winner, in a neutral site triumph over French River Sunday afternoon in Smooth Rock Falls.
Currently riding a seven-game point streak, Shaver has recorded 29 points in 43 outings for his side this season on 16 markers and 13 assists.
MATTHEW CARUSO, (F) SOO THUNDERBIRDS – Taking to the ice three times last week for his hometown Thunderbirds, Caruso played the role of set-up man as he doled out eight assists in a trio of Sault Ste. Marie victories.
The 19-year-old Caruso dished out two helpers in a triumph over Blind River Wednesday, added three more in a Friday night win at Elliot Lake then finished off his impressive performance with three more assists in a Sunday afternoon decision at Espanola.
The T-Birds captain currently leads his club on offensive production 58 points in 45 games, including 24 goals.
That ties him for sixth in NOJHL scoring and he’s also seventh in game-winning tallies with five.
KADE PHIPPS, (G) SOO EAGLES – Suiting up in two starts last week Phipps did his job keeping the Eagles in it allowing them to rally for a pair of come from behind victories.
The 19-year-old Perrysburg, Ohio product started off with a 41-save performance as the Michigan Soo came back from a two-goal deficit to defeat Blind River Friday at Pullar Stadium.
Phipps then stopped another 30 shots Sunday night as the Eagles came back with four unanswered markers in the third and win at Centennial Arena in Elliot Lake.
Since joining the Soo in mid-October, he’s gone 17-9 overall with one shutout.
Phipps is presently fifth in goals-against average in the NOJHL at 2.83 and fourth in save percentage at .914.
