NOJHL leads the way to CJHL Prospects sweep

YARMOUTH, N.S. – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League played a pivotal role to help Team East complete a two-game sweep of Team West in the finale of the Canadian Junior Hockey League’s Prospects Games Saturday in Yarmouth, N.S. as they skated to a 4-2 victory at Mariner’s Centre.

Soo Thunderbirds netminder Joel Horodziejczyk was stellar between the pipes for the East making 36 saves to register the win in a contest that saw his side out shot 38-25 overall.

With the triumph Team East, led behind the bench by Espanola Rivermen head coach Tom McCarthy, took the two-game, total-goal series 8-4 and their first President’s Cup trophy win since 2010.

Sudbury Nickel Barons forward Ryan Punkari, who notched the game-winner in the opening contest Friday in Digby, N.S., began the scoring 85 seconds into Saturday’s contest to send the East on their way.

Espanola’s Cray Roberge, who also had two assists in Friday’s win, added another helper on the second goal to aid the offensive cause for Team East.
