SUDBURY, Ont. – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League (NOJHL) announced Monday that forward Alex Povorozniouk (Soo Eagles); defenceman Alexandre Valade (Greater Sudbury Cubs) and goaltender Justin Sullivan (Iroquois Falls Storm), have been named its BrokerLink Insurance 3 Stars of the Week, for the period ending Jan. 12.
Alex Povorozniouk, (F) Soo Eagles: Powering the Eagles offensively in a pair of impressive home-ice victories over the weekend, the 18-year-old from McHenry, Illinois collected five points in all.
Povorozniouk tallied twice and helped set-up three more markers in lopsided triumphs over Espanola and Blind River.
Currently riding a 12-game point streak, the Eagles’ leading scorer presently paces all NOJHL rookies in offensive production with 55 points. That also puts him third overall among all league skaters, while his 38 assists put him atop the list in the all-players category.
Alexandre Valade, (D) Greater Sudbury Cubs: Stepping up at both ends of the ice, Valade buoyed a short-staffed Cubs’ defensive corps in a pair of wins for red-hot Greater Sudbury.
The 17-year-old, first-year blueliner, notched a nice goal and picked up a trio of helpers for his hometown team, in seeing his side extend a winning streak to a current NOJHL-best 17 consecutive outings.
Picking up points in four straight, Valade has moved into second spot in scoring among league rookie rearguards with 21. He’s also first in goals with seven.
Justin Sullivan, (G) Iroquois Falls Storm: In his lone start of the week, Sullivan was stellar in a narrow 2-1 road triumph in Hearst on Sunday, in which he was credited with 40 saves, in facing that many, or more, shot attempts for the seventh time this season.
The 19-year-old netminder, who hails from New Richmond, Que., also only allowed one to get past him in a relief stint of over 22 minutes versus the same Lumberjacks, Thursday.
Sullivan’s efforts during the time frame had him register a goals-against average of 1.46 and a .964 save percentage.
