NOJHL names its Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the week

SUDBURY – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Monday that a goaltender, defenceman and a forward have earned Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the week honours for the period ending Oct. 16.

Garnering the laurels this week is Iroquois Falls Eskis netminder Artem Bortovskiy, Blind River Beavers forward Caleb Serre and Soo Thunderbirds D-man Jake Behse.

ARTEM BORTOVSKIY, (G) IROQUOIS FALLS ESKIS –– In three starts last week the 19-year-old Richmond Hill, Ont., product won each of them helping the Eskis make a six-point jump in the NOJHL standings.

Bortovskiy began by making 40 saves in a 4-3 upset over the Powassan Voodoos in Day 1 action at the NOJHL Showcase in Sudbury Tuesday.

He then had 33 stops Saturday as Iroquois Falls doubled up French River 4-2 and then wrapped up his solid week with a 38-save performance Sunday as the Eskis earned a home win over the visiting Soo Eagles at Jus Jordan Arena.

To go along with his three victories, the Iroquois Falls netminder posted a 2.32 goals-against average for the week along with a .938 save percentage.

CALEB SERRE, (F) BLIND RIVER BEAVERS – In four games last week the 17-year-old rookie forward amassed seven points as he moved up to third in team offensive production on the Beavers.

The Blind River native started off by scoring once and dishing out three assists, including helping set-up the game-winner, in his club’s 6-5 triumph over the Soo Eagles Tuesday at the NOJHL Showcase.

After being held off the scoresheet in narrow losses to Rayside-Balfour and Espanola, Serre capped off his week by notching another marker and supplying two helpers as the Beavers clipped the Canadians Sunday afternoon.

The diminutive five-foot-seven-inch Serre packs plenty of offensive punch as he’s averaging just over a point-per-game for Blind River with 14 in 13 outings, including six goals.

JAKE BEHSE, (D) SOO THUNDERBIRDS – Turning in a solid two-way performance at the NOJHL Showcase earned Behse league weekly accolades.

The 19-year-old from Thunder Bay, Ont., started off with a strong defensive performance Tuesday at the Showcase helping the Thunderbirds earn a hard-fought 2-1 triumph over Elliot Lake.

Behse then followed that up by blasting home two goals Wednesday as Sault Ste. Marie got by Espanola 4-3 in another tightly contested match-up.

On the season the T-Birds blueliner currently shares the club lead in offensive production among defenceman with eight points, including four tallies, which leads all D-men on the squad.

Behse is also tied for seventh in league scoring among rearguards and sits third in goals.
