NOJHL names its Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the Week

SUDBURY, Ont. – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Monday that Hearst Lumberjacks forward Zachary Demers as well as defencemen Caleb Resch of the Espanola Express and the Powassan Voodoos’ Caleb Van de Ven have been named its Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the Week for the period ending Oct. 24.

ZACHARY DEMERS, (F) HEARST LUMBERJACKS – In a pair of home ice triumphs during the time frame, the 19-year-old from St-Hubert, Que., had multi-point performances in each of them, helping Hearst improve to 9-1-0-0 in their past 10 games.

In weekend wins over Cochrane and Powassan, Demers tallied twice and dished out three assists to move into top spot in the NOJHL scoring race.

With goals in four straight and points in six in succession, he currently leads all league skaters in assists with 15 along with his NOJHL-best 20 points, in just 12 outings.

Demers has already surpassed his personal-best point total from last season in the same number of games played.

CALEB RESCH, (D) ESPANOLA EXPRESS – The 20-year-old blueliner was solid on both ends of the ice aiding in the recent success of the Express.

Hailing from Winnipeg, Man., Resch racked up five assists for Espanola in a pair of contests aiding in two victories for his club.

This included a career-high four-point night against Elliot Lake on Saturday.

Resch will enter play this week riding a five-game point streak and presently leads all NOJHL defencemen in helpers with 11 while sitting fourth overall in offensive production among D-men.

CALEB VAN DE VEN, (D) POWASSAN VOODOOS – At just 16 years of age, Van de Ven is already showing his versatility as a quality rearguard for the Voodoos.

Averaging a point-a-game during a three-game road swing and being solid defensively, the efforts of the Delaware, Ont., native aided in Powassan picking up five of a possible six points.

Included in his contributions was a two-assist effort Sunday, which included a nice play to set-up the game-winner in the third period, as Voodoos handed Timmins their initial regulation time defeat of the season.

Van de Ven’s five tallies so far on the year are the most of any league blueliner while his nine points have him tied for seventh in numbers among defencemen.
