NOJHL names its Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the week
SUDBURY, Ont. – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Monday that Soo Thunderbirds goaltender Brandon Gordon, Blind River Beavers netminder Myles Hektor and Timmins Rock forward Bain Cunningham have been named the Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the week for the period ending Dec. 11.
BRANDON GORDON, (G) SOO THUNDERBIRDS – In two starts during the week that was, the 19-year-old Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., product won both of them helping the Thunderbirds extend their current winning streak to eight.
Gordon started with an impressive 30-save road shutout of the Blind River Beavers in a thrilling 1-0 double overtime triumph this past Wednesday.
He then manned the Soo net once again on Sunday evening turning aside 32 of the 34 shots he faced to backstop his club to a 3-2 decision at Elliot Lake.
The Thunderbirds stopper posted a stingy 0.94 goals-against average for the week along with a stellar .969 save percentage.
Gordon has also won his past six starts and sits tied for the league lead in wins with 17 and shutouts with three.
MYLES HEKTOR, (G) BLIND RIVER BEAVERS – Once again Hektor turned in some solid performances to boost the efforts of the resurgent Beavers.
Like his Thunderbirds counterpart Gordon, Hektor too registered a solid 0.94 average last week helping his team continue their vast improvement in the league standings.
The 18-year-old goalkeeper, who hails from the Illinois community of Lake Bluff, stopped 37 of 38 attempts he saw in the double OT setback against the T-Birds.
Hektor then made another 37 saves Saturday as the Beavers secured a 3-1 away triumph over the Soo Eagles to finish his week with a stellar .974 save mark.
His 16 victories so far this season are the third most in the NOJHL.
BAIN CUNNINGHAM, (F) TIMMINS ROCK – Taking to the ice twice last week for the Rock, Cunningham picked up five points in all helping lead Timmins to a pair of victories.
The 19-year-old Barrie, Ont., native began by picking up an assist in a Rock win over French River on Thursday.
Two nights later he tallied twice, once on the power play and another shorthanded, and doled out two assists in a decision over Rayside-Balfour.
He’s presently averaging over a point-per-game for the club with 39 in 30 outings, including 11 tallies.
Now in his second season in Timmins, Cunningham is just three points shy of 100 in his Rock career having totalled 36 goals and 61 assists in 83 games.
