NOJHL Team-By-Team Previews: Elliot Lake Bobcats

SUDBURY –- With the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League’s regular season getting underway this evening the final team preview heading into the opener is on the newest member of the NOJHL, the Elliot Lake Bobcats.

OUTLOOK: The newest team in the league this season are the Bobcats of Elliot Lake.

They become the seventh team in the NOJHL after being granted an expansion franchise following a five-year run in the Greater Metro Hockey League.

In those five GMHL campaigns the club posted a record of 158-38, which included two regular season crowns and a league championship in 2011.

Leading the Bobcats is Ryan Leonard who serves as not only owner of the team, but their general manager and head coach as well.

Elliot Lake makes their NOJHL debut Friday as they host the North Bay Trappers at Centennial Arena in a 7:30 p.m.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

TANNER SWIFT: Another ex-GMHLer this goaltender looks to backstop the Bobcats to success in their inaugural year in the NOJHL. Had an impressive 17-4 record in 26 games with South Muskoka posting a 3.13 goals-against average and .893 save percentage. His victory total topped all GMHL netminders while finishing third in GAA.

DANNY CARTER: Named the club’s captain entering their first season in the NOJHL. Skated in 34 games in the GMHL last season registering 60 points in 34 games for the South Muskoka Shield. His 31 goals were the second most on the team.

JOHN WAGHORNE: One of the returnees who played for Elliot Lake in the GMHL last season. In 42 outings in 2011-12 the defenceman had six tallies and nine helpers.
