SUDBURY, Ont. – A solid road effort helped the Espanola Paper Kings put an end to a nine-game winning streak by the Greater Sudbury Cubs as they skated to a 4-1 victory over them Thursday in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest at Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex.
A surging Pierson Sobush did begin the scoring for Greater Sudbury by finding the back of the net for a six straight outing as he got a friendly bounce off the end boards and hammered home a shorthanded marker from a sharp angle that flew past Espanola netminder Jake Marois at 4:43.
Answering with an equalizer, the Paper Kings drew level seven minutes later thanks to Alexander Christopoulos, who controlled a bouncing puck before lifting in a backhand on Cubs’ starter Noah Metivier for a man advantage marker.
Following a scoreless second stanza, Espanola took lead 1:34 into the third as they collected a Greater Sudbury turnover and saw Jonathan Lush set-up Lucas Signoretti on the left side where he fired a low attempt under Metivier for his 12th tally of the season.
Capitalizing on another play that a Cubs defender had difficulty controlling allowed the guests to go up 3-1 as Hunter Friesen was there to convert from close range with just over 11 minutes remaining in regulation.
The guests then finished off the away triumph in the final minute as Benjamin Lacroix put one into an empty net to wraps things up offensively.
The win sees Espanola improve to 15-11-2-2 overall while Greater Sudbury saw their recent winning ways come to an end as they dropped to 25-5-2-0 on the year.
