Peters paces Powassan past Espanola
POWASSAN, Ont. – Tyler Peters notched a natural hat trick scoring the game’s first three goals to help pace the Powassan Voodoos past the Espanola Express 4-1 Monday evening in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League match-up at the Powassan Sportsplex.
It was scoreless in this one until the 16:10 mark of the opening period when Peters got thing going offensively for the Voodoos on an assist by McKenzie Gray.
Peters then struck quickly in the middle session scoring nine seconds into the frame to make it 2-0.
He then capped off his three-tally night with his third of the evening at 14:24 of the stanza.
Espanola got one back in the latter stages of the second when Ian Thompson’s second of the season at 17:28 to make it 3-1 after 40 minutes.
Powassan’s Nathaniel McLeod countered that with the final goal of the evening two and a half minutes into the third to round out the scoring.
2014-15 NOJHL rookie of the year and MVP Steve Harland dished out three assists to aid the Voodoos’ offensive cause.
Mario Cavaliere made 27 saves to register the win for the Voodoos as they joined the Soo Thunderbirds atop the overall NOJHL standings with an unbeaten 5-0 record.
J.P. Sabourin stopped 31 of 35 in defeat for the Express, who fell to 0-5 early on.
NOJHL action resumes Wednesday on two fronts as the French River Rapids host the Blind River Beavers and the Timmins Rock entertain the Iroquois Falls Eskis in a pair of 7:30 p.m. starts.
