Powassan powers past Cochrane for 15th straight win

COCHRANE, Ont. – Having not tasted defeat since back on Oct. 11 at the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League Showcase, the Powassan Voodoos powered their way past the Cochrane Crunch 6-1 Friday to win their 15th straight game.

A large part of the Voodoos hot streak can be attributed to forward Gary Mantz who scored for a 10th straight contest in Friday’s triumph as he also extended a consecutive game point streak to 20 in the process.

Powassan let it be known early that they had every intension or seeing their torrid pace continue as they grabbed a 3-0 lead after one period of play on tallies by Brett Hahkala, Mantz and Ryan Theriault.

The visitors then chased Crunch starter Jacob Burhans with two more markers before the second stanza was six minutes old on efforts from Tyson Gilmour and Hahkala.

Leighton Williams came in to play net for Cochrane after that, however the Voodoos’ Gabriel Rheault put one past him 6:53 into the third period.

The Crunch did come at Powassan hard in the final session firing 20 shots on goaltender Nate McDonald.

They finally beat the Voodoos stopper with 9:52 left in the contest on a Bailey Shaver goal to round out the scoring.

McDonald finished with 36 saves to pick up the win.

Burhans suffered the loss for Cochrane allowing five on 17 attempts while Williams handled 17 of 18 in relief.
