Powassan powers past Iroquois Falls

IROQUOIS FALLS, Ont. – The Powassan Voodoos picked up three assists from Cameron Moore to help them power past the Iroquois Falls Eskis 7-3 Saturday night in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at Jus Jordan Arena.

Each squad tallied twice with the first nine minutes of the initial period with Parker Bowman and Andy Baker’s NOJHL-best 44th providing the markers for Powassan while Shadow Reuben and Wade Auger connected for Iroquois Falls in the session.

The Voodoos broke it open in the middle stanza by striking three times to go up 5-2 after two.

Tyson Gilmour’s 20th, along with Tyler Gervais-Rolfe at even strength and Kyle Challis scoring on the power play accounted for the offensive production in the period.

Ryan Theriault and Rhys Brown, via the man advantage, tacked on two more in the third to extend the Powassan cushion before the Eskis’ Ryan Gruszka rounded out the scoring at 15:33.

Cade Herd dished out a pair of assists for Powassan.

The visitors outshot Iroquois Falls 42-26 in the contest with Nate McDonald picking up his league-leading 29th win of the season and Trevor Hawkes suffering the loss.

The Voodoos still have two games remaining, but have already captured both the NOJHL’s West Division and overall regular season titles and will boast the No. 1 seed in the upcoming playoffs.

The Eskis also have a pair of contests left, however they are guaranteed to finish fifth in the West and will take on the No. 4 Kirkland Lake Gold Miners in first round, quarter-final action in a best-of-three affair with Powassan awaiting the winner in a best-of-seven divisional semifinal series.
