Powassan rolls over Mattawa

POWASSAN – A six-goal second period help power the Powassan Voodoos to an 11-2 decision over the visiting Mattawa Blackhawks Friday in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest held at the Powassan Sportsplex.

Steve Harland led the Voodoos offensively with five points each while Aaron Sullivan had four and Kyle Moore notched a hat trick.

The two sides traded first period tallies with Moore putting home side up one early before Jimmy Philbin countered for Mattawa at 14:16.

In the second stanza it was all Powassan as they put in the half dozen markers in a 13-minute span to take total control of the match-up.

Jeremy St. Pierre and Nathaniel McLeod made it 3-1 before the middle frame was two minutes old while Harland and Nolan Smith got in the act putting the Voodoos up four before five minutes had elapsed.

Moore and Harland then added efforts 67 seconds apart later in the period to extend the cushion.

Mattawa got one back from Tyler Broderson at 4:34 of the final frame before Sullivan buried his third of the campaign to make it 8-2.

Another by Sullivan, Harland and Moore rounded out the scoring for Powassan in the romp.

Matt Young made 28 stops to pick up the win for the Voodoos.

Joe Sheppard started for the Blackhawks and suffered the loss allowing seven against on 32 shots.

Josh Horner turned aside 19 of 23 in 26 and a half minutes of relief.
