Powassan takes postseason opener
POWASSAN – Kyle Moore scored three times, including the game-winner, as the Powassan Voodoos doubled up the Mattawa Blackhawks 4-2 Monday evening in the opening game of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League postseason at the Powassan Sportsplex.
Game 2 of their best-of-three East Division quarter-final playoff series goes Tuesday at Mike Rodden Arena in Mattawa with game time set for 7 p.m.
Should the Blackhawks force a third and deciding contest, it will be held back in Powassan on Thursday at 7 p.m.
Special teams allowed the Voodoos to notch the lone tally of the opening period as Moore connected on the power play at 11:06.
Moore put the home side up by a pair six and a half minutes into the middle stanza before Brett Ouderkirk got Mattawa on the board at the 18-minute mark of the frame with a man advantage effort.
The Voodoos then added the eventual difference maker 7:14 into the final frame as Moore capped of his hat trick to make it 3-1.
Brendan D’Agostino then added an even strength effort midway through the third to extend the Powassan lead.
The Blackhawks picked up a shorthanded marker from Reed Gregory with three minutes remaining in regulation, but would get no closer before time expired.
NOJHL most valuable player and rookie of the year Steve Harland, along with teammate Jake Staples, both doled out two assists for the Voodoos in the Game 1 victory.
Powassan held the edge in shots on goal in the contest by a 33-18 count with Matt Young picking up the win and Joe Sheppard the loss.
