Powassan tops Blind River 6-2

POWASSAN – Newly acquired Jacob Erwin tallied twice in his Powassan Voodoos debut helping his new club skate to a 6-2 victory over the Blind River Beavers Friday night in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League competition at the Powassan Sportsplex.

Aaron Dart opened the scoring for the home side early in the first period before Trent Linklater levelled the proceedings six minutes into contest.

Powassan went back in front thanks to Erwin at 11:14 and Steve Harland extended the lead to 3-1 with a shorthanded marker with 4:33 to go.

The Beavers battled back to pull within one before the session was done thanks to Nathan Johnson’s fourth in a Blind River uniform.

After a scoreless middle stanza, the Voodoos put the game away in the third tacking on three tallies off the sticks of Traven Reed, Erwin and Brendan D’Agostino to round out the scoring.

Garry Mindus and Aaron Sullivan chipped in offensively with two assists apiece for Powassan as did Alex Cyrenne for Blind River.

Jack Ondrovic made 23 stops to register the win for Powassan, who fired 41 shots on Beavers starter Zachary Mills.

The Voodoos return to game action Saturday as they host the defending NOJHL champion Kirkland Lake Gold Miners in a 7:30 p.m. start at the Sportsplex.

Next up for Blind River is a road game Saturday at 5 p.m. in Mattawa.
