Power play paces Kirkland Lake past Powassan
KIRKLAND LAKE – The Kirkland Lake Gold Miners tallied twice on the power play as part of a three-goal second period to help them defeat the Powassan Voodoos 6-2 Friday evening in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League match-up at the Joe Mavrinac Community Community Complex.
It was the visiting Voodoos who got on the board first as Kyle Moore connected 1:46 into the contest for his 25th marker of the season snapping a Gold Miners shutout streak at 171 minutes and 32 seconds.
Kirkland Lake countered with the equalizer at 3:15 with that effort coming off the stick of Jamey Lauzon.
Taking advantage of four-minute power play, the Gold Miners struck twice in a 22-second span to take the lead for good as a NOJHL first team all-star in Ethan Strong beat Powassan starter Jack Ondrovic two times in rapid succession.
Strong now tops all league defencemen in man advantage markers with 14, which is also the second most of any player in the league.
Jeremy Dumont’s 26th goal and 50th point of the campaign made it 4-1 Gold Miners at 17:56 of the middle stanza.
The Voodoos drew closer midway through the final frame on a Nicolas Proulx effort, only to see Zach Pease strike for Kirkland Lake’s third man advantage effort of the contest at 15:40 to make it 5-2.
Joel Fortin added one at even strength for the home side a minute and a half later to round out the scoring.
Strong also had two assists for a four-point night while fellow first team all-star blueliner Jeremy Picard-Fiset as well as Alexi Rivet also supplied two helpers apiece to help the Kirkland Lake cause.
Josh Erickson stopped 17 of 19 attempts fired his way to pick up his league-leading 23rd win of the season.
Ondrovic faced 35 shots in defeat for the Voodoos. While affiliate Colton Point made one save in a brief relief appearance in the second.
