POWASSAN, Ont. – Greater Sudbury Cubs goalkeeper Joel Rainville was unbeatable right to the end, including a splendid glove save with just moments remaining in the game, as he backstopped his club to a 5-0 win over the Powassan Voodoos Saturday in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League match-up at the Powassan Sportsplex.

Greater Sudbury grabbed the night’s opening tally midway through the first period as Mathieu Morin powered his way to the net off a face off win and neatly placed a backhand through the legs of Powassan starter Alex Bugeja.

On a two-man advantage to begin the second stanza, the Cubs capitalized with Pierson Sobush using a Voodoos’ defender as a screen as he whipped an attempt into the right corner at 1:05.

It was more from the forward three minutes later as he tacked on another following a dump in by Seth Coulter bounced right to him in the slot where he proceeded to fire one off the post and in to put the guests up by three.

Putting the finishing touches on the road victory, the Cubs’ Cole Crowder scored at 12:57 of the third before Nicholas Faught buried one from the high slot with a sharp wrister five minutes later to wrap things up.

The shutout for Rainville was his fourth of the season, which ties him for the league-lead with Noah Metivier of the Soo Thunderbirds.

With the result, Greater Sudbury improved to 24-15-3-1 while Powassan dropped to 30-11-5-1 overall.
