Rayside-Balfour hands Kirkland Lake 1st loss

KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. – A pair of third period goals, 29 seconds apart, allowed the Rayside-Balfour Canadians to pull out a 4-3 road victory over the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners Sunday afternoon in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

Tristan Simm staked the Canadians to an early lead in this one as he connected 26 seconds after the opening face-off.

Special teams allowed Rayside-Balfour to go up a pair midway through the session when Logan Lefebvre scored on the power play.

Answering back, Damian Carigni put the home side on the board at 13:06 as he notched his second of the campaign to make it 2-1 after one.

The Gold Miners tied it sixth and a half minutes into the middle stanza off the stick of Ashton Amaya while teammate Stavros Soilis put Kirkland Lake in front at 10:33.

Heading into the third, the Canadians levelled the proceedings at 7:23 when Simm picked up his second of the day.

Building on the momentum of the equalizer, Rayside-Balfour came right back on the next shift and scored the game-winner off the stick of Chad Denault to round out the scoring.

Owen Johansson made 25 saves to record his first NOJHL win for the Canadians.

Jeff Veitch faced 23 shots in defeat for the Gold Miners.

With the result Rayside-Balfour improves to 3-2-1-0 on the year while Kirkland Lake suffered their first loss of the campaign as they fell to 4-1-0-0.
