Rivermen tame Trappers in Mattawa

MATTAWA – Brennen Dubchak tallied twice and set-up one more to help lead the Espanola Rivermen to a 4-1 triumph over the North Bay Trappers Sunday night in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at the Mike Rodden Arena and Community Centre in Mattawa.

Espanola snagged a two-goal lead after one period of play thanks to Brandon Janke and Dubchak.

North Bay responded early in the middle session to get on the board as Chance Thomas connected at the 46-second mark of the stanza.

Dubchak countered that with his second of the night and 35th of the season in the final minute of the stanza to restore the Rivermen’s two-goal cushion.

Robert Smythe then added some insurance in the latter stages of the contest to conclude the scoring on the evening.

Corbin Bean doled out three assists for Espanola while Janke had a couple helpers of his own to join Dubchak with three-point nights.

Keegan Paulette turned aside 29 of 30 attempts fired his way to pick-up the win in his Rivermen debut.

Evan Cormier saw 44 shots sent his way in defeat.

With the victory Espanola moved past Abitibi back into third spot in the NOJHL standings, one point ahead of the Eskimos.

League action resumes Monday as Abitibi hosts the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners in a 7:30 p.m. start at Jus Jordan Arena.
